Ashley Sumner, 38, of Hoddle Street, pleaded guilty in Warrnambool Magistrates Court to intentionally damage property.

Lawyer Xavier Farrelly said his client was serving a four-month jail sentence for assault-related offending and was expected to be released on May 24.

He said Sumner had legitimate concerns for his son, who was recently arrested at his uncle's house.

He said at time of the offending Sumner had mixed steroid medication and alcohol and was "having trouble controlling himself".

The court heard on October 14 Sumner attended the Warrnambool police station and said he wanted to be locked up so he could speak to his brother, who he alleged had sold drugs to his teenage son.

When police refused to take Sumner to the cells, he began ripping brochures and posters from the walls and repeatedly kicking a door, causing damage worth $160.

He was arrested and, due to his intoxication, held in the police cells.

Magistrate Michael Stratman said Sumner's behaviour was bizarre.

"I understand the circumstances but the reality is this behaviour can not be anything but condemned," he said.

Sumner was sentenced to 30 days' jail. He immediately appealed against the severity of the sentence.

He will be released on appeal bail at the conclusion of his current jail term.
