After eight years, the Warrnambool Symphony Orchestra is taking their final bow at Warrnambool Primary School as the Musica Prima program comes to a close.

Piano teacher and Musica Prima organiser Anita Hoekstra said Warrnambool Primary School has developed a strong music culture since the concerts began.

"When we started the students struggled to name the instruments in the orchestra, now they can just about name them all," Mrs Hoekstra said.

"When we first started there was no music program running at Warrnambool Primary,

"Jamo now has a very strong music program with regular performances at assembly by students, a saxaphone ensemble, ukulele ensemble, and a range of different choirs and orchestras.

"We are now looking for a new school to run the concerts."

Deputy principal Dean Clements said the legacy of the Musica Prima program will be huge.

"The flow on to the school has been amazing," Mr Clements said.

"The kids love it, and research shows that having a music program is phenomenal for their education.

"We have now put all of our grade three and four teachers through a specialist 'Musical Future' professional development program to help them integrate music into all classroom activities.

"Warrnambool is sports-mad, and there are a lot of kids who would not have access to music outside of their school hours because of their sporting commitments."
