There was a total of 178 cattle yarded at the Hamilton Fat cattle market; with numbers easing on last week's market. However, the overall market improved with per head prices seeing a rise to $1140.00 at an average of $2.02 a kg. All attending buyers assisted with this uplift with active bidding and generating good competition across the yarding.
Bull prices set the trend for the market with the best bulls selling at $2.45 per kg, showing consecutive market increases and an increase of 10 cents per kg from last week.
Today's yarding of trade cattle again showed good form with the market with encouraging signs from buyers on higher quality offerings. Trade heifers increased, selling well on last week with an increase of 15 cents per kg to sell for an average $2.35 per kg and with the market top of $2.70 per kg.
A small number of bullocks were yarded, however, with competition between buyers this continued on last week's improved showing with heavy steers reaching a top of $2.74 per kg and averages of $2.66 per kg.
A high percentage of the overall yarding for today was a very good run of heavy beef bred cows seeing 116 cows yarded. This continued on last week's improving form with a market high price of $2.25 per kg netting $1,545. Averages again were similar to last week's prices selling at $2.00 per kilo.

HAMILTON SHEEP & LAMBS
May 8. Yarding: 22,240. Change: down 3679. Lambs: 13,732. Change: down 2008. Sheep: 8508. Change: down 1671.
Not all last week's buyers were present for the reduced sized penning of 13,732 lambs and 8,508 sheep. Quality was again mixed but more trade to heavier weight lambs were penned this week. Prices opened a few dollars dearer for the 26kg plus lambs but soon eased to last week's levels while trade weights were equal to just a little easier throughout the sale. Restocker competition was steady with less of these buyers present and resultant prices were fully equal though this week they also pushed into the extra lighter weights and lifted prices for these up to $10/head. The sheep sale saw most sheep categories sell unchanged to $5/head higher. Poor conditioned sheep however were cheaper. The light weight 12kg to 16kg 1 score lambs sold from $93 to $132 with restockers going to $139/head. The light trade weight 16kg to 18kg 2 score lambs were from $120 to $141 with restockers to $142/head. Trade weight 18kg to 22kg 3 score lambs made $136 to $166/head and dressed weight costs averaged an estimated 710c/kg cwt. Heavy trade weight 22kg 26kg 3 and 4 score lambs sold between $156 and $201/head for a 722c/kg cwt average. Extra heavy weight 4 score 26kg plus lambs were from $190 to $243/head. Light weight 1 score sheep sold from $46 to $124, while medium weight 2 and 3 scores were from $115 to $155/head. The heavy weight 3 and 4 score ewes made $145 to $221/head and a run of ewe mutton averaged an estimated 540c/kg cwt. There was more weight in the Merino wethers this week and the heavy weights sold from $105 to $166 with medium weights from $80 to $114/head. A run of Merino wethers were estimated at just over 600c/kg cwt. Most rams sold between $32 and $80 with the best to $108/head.

COLAC CATTLE
May 9. Yarding: 361. Change: down 53.
There was less processor competition, but restockers were strong in the mixed quality penning of 361 cattle. Prices for the better quality and finished young cattle were close to unchanged, but the gap to the poor and plainer conditioned types widened further as prices for these came back at least 10c/kg. The grown steers were leaner and attracted keen restocker inquiry to sell from firm to approximately 5c/kg more. Better finished grown heifers remained unchanged in prices, but cows were a general 10c/kg cheaper. The good to very good quality B2 heavy weight bulls lifted 5c to 10c/kg when allowing for their lift in quality. This week's yarding comprised of 46 grown steers, 52 grown heifers, 76 young cattle, 180 cows and 7 bulls. The odd few average to good quality C muscled vealers sold up to 265c, while the yearling portion made from 245c to 286c/kg. The plainer D muscled grade was from 166c to 199c, with restockers going to 223c/kg. The C2 and C3 grown steers received from 245c to 276c/kg, with restockers purchasing close to half the offering. The D2 manufacturing steers went to restockers at 215c and 225c/kg. The C3 and C4 grown heifers made from 230c to 255c, with the top at 270c, as D2s received from 172c to 210c/kg. Well finished beef cows sold from 200c to 225c, with a top price at 235c/kg. The few D2 grades received from 160c to 200c and D1 cows made from 140c to 178c/kg. Most E1 cows sold from 125c to 160c, with poor quality from 95c/kg. The four B2 heavy weight bulls received from 218c to 235c/kg.
