Wannon doesn't need a Liberal, Labor or Green member. Wannon needs a Wannon member who will represent us and not a party machine. We currently have a career politician who was parachuted in, his career is going well. But Wannon isn't. Our local economy depends on transport but our roads are goat tracks and our rail is substandard. The last time a politician of any standing came this way it was Tony Abbott and he was bloody near killed on the highway (but for the skills of a local truckie). It's blatantly obvious whoever rules in Canberra or Spring Street makes not one iota of difference to Wannon so it's time we thought a bit differently and voted 1 Wannon.

Climate change politics
CFA district six operations officer Mark Gunning speaking about climate change has stated (The Standard, April 12) "the research is telling us that we're seeing larger areas drying out, so fire fuels are available and they're staying drier longer" and that "the St Patrick's day fires were an example of the changing fire conditions" and "there is no doubt the types of emergencies and the scale of them is ramping up". Despite these, and other, increasingly detrimental effects of climate change, farmers (and rural people generally) usually vote for the parties that have the least effective climate change policies, the Liberal/ National Party. Former Liberal Prime Minister Tony Abbott claimed that the "so-called settled science of climate change" was "absolute crap" and over the last five years of Liberal government their ministers have repeatedly fought against and criticised attempts to alleviate the effects of climate change. The carbon pricing scheme (which was reducing greenhouse admissions) was scrapped. The National Energy Guarantee was scrapped. Renewable energy, the Tesla battery and electric cars have all been mocked by LNP ministers and under the Liberal National party government greenhouse gas emissions have continued to rise. The message is very clear, if rural voters want more extreme weather, longer droughts and more bush fires they should continue to vote for the current sitting member for Wannon Liberal Dan Tehan.

Need a change
When will our local member do something for Wannon. Real things like Princes Highway and trains, what the voters want, not half-hearted promises. Dan stop going to flower shows and deal with the real things your voters say are important. Your party both had time to do this when you were in office, federal and state. We need a change.

Protect rail trail
On 9 April we visited the region, hired bikes and rode the Warrnambool to Koroit section of the rail trail. While passing the local rendering works just out of Warrnambool was an experience for my vegetarian son, we were more disappointed to come across a shot wallaby just further along the trail. It had been shot the night before and evidence of takeaway containers were strewn along this section of trail behind the dunes. Hoon vehicle tracks had also torn up the trail, farmers fences were pushed over and someone had written "cock" over the trail signage. A sad small tag lacking creativity. The council could fence off the trail from the rendering works onwards to save wildlife, stop litter, damage to fences and to the signage. We loved getting to Koroit on the rail trail and having a cuppa along with the charming regional gesture of two smarties served on the spoon! A small hoon gate on the trail just past the rendering works would make the rail trail more charming too.
