Racing Victoria stewards suspended Pateman for five races on a careless riding charge.
Stewards said the 36-year-old permitted Bit Of A Lad to shift in when insufficiently clear of Gold Medals, who was checked and lost his rightful running after clearing the second-last fence. In handing down the penalty, stewards said the offence was in the "mid range", they took into consideration Pateman's record and that it happened in a feature race.
That incident was part of an unsuccessful protest by Gold Medals' jockey Clayton Douglas.
Pateman was also suspended for five races after using his whip in consecutive strides on eight occasions over the final 100 metres in the Brierly.
Pateman had earlier been charged with careless riding in a maiden hurdle earlier in the day. He copped a five-race suspension for a similar "mid range" incident. The careless riding penalties were to be served concurrently.
The jockey revealed after the Brierly that he had lost six kilograms in the past week to take the ride on Bit Of A Lad. Pateman has dominated the carnival's jumps races, amassing 18 winners, the most of any rider in the past 24 years.
