Former Warrnambool jockey Mark Ryan was among the big crowd on the first day of the carnival. Ryan, who was apprenticed to late local trainer Norm Rantall, also rode for legendary western district trainers Teddy O'Sullivan and Jack Barling in the 1980s. He is back in town to visit his mum Cath before heading back to Western Australia.
BUG
Love the commitment from Warrnambool's Darcy Chandler to the carnival. Chandler, a strapper for champion trainer Chris Waller at Flemington, left town mid-morning to head back home to see the Brierly Steeplechase before jumping back in the car to Melbourne.
ON PAR
More than 6000 people filed through the gates for the opening day of the carnival. The number is similar to last year's record first day crowd.
CHASING
Punters finished in front after ten races on Tuesday. High profile bookie Robbie Waterhouse said many heavily backed runners were successful on the ten race program.
BUCKET LIST
Veteran NSW jockey Robert Thompson was spotted trackside on Tuesday. Thompson, who has ridden more than 4000 winners in his career, had always wanted to experience a Warrnambool May Racing Carnival and ticked it off his bucket list.
