In the final race of the opening day of this year's carnival Ryan's lucky charm pulled through when Grandview Avenue stormed home to claim victory over Royal Boss and Aerovictory.
Ryan joined fellow south-west trainers Aaron Purcell (race eight), Ciaron Maher (race three and Brierly Steeplechase), Symon Wilde (race five), Daniel Bowman (race seven) and Peter Chow (race nine) with victories on the opening day of racing.
The Warrnambool-based trainer said he did not expect the three-year-old to be the one that would open his account at this year's carnival.
"I thought my jumpers would go better and I put my arm around my mother-in-law before and I said 'I'm hoping you get me out of the ditch'," he said.
"I have had a second and a third today but she always comes through for me and she has done it again."
Brad Rawiller collected his 34th race victory at Warrnambool much to Ryan's pleasure on how he and Grandview Avenue handled the race.
"He rode him beautifully and Grandview Avenue seems to be a better horse held up," he said.
"I thought with 60-kilos on a three-year-old against older horses he had the job ahead of him.
"He has a good bit of talent he just hasn't quite got his head quite around it (racing) yet but he has a good future.
"Anyone that has ridden him says he has good talent and it was good to see him put away a field that had a bit of depth in it."
