The 23-year-old Cobden export was a standout in his side's 58-point demolition of North Melbourne on Friday, collecting 39 disposals and laying nine tackles in the Bombers' third on the trot.

"I think we're starting to build to a four-quarter performance," Merrett told Essendon's website.

"We're starting to really understand the way we want to play. It's an exciting brand of footy for fans to watch and it's pretty exciting out there to play as well."

Despite three strong individual performances in a row, Merrett said he just took things one game at a time.

"I don't rely on confidence or form to play well - I just get out there and try to be present in every moment and contest," he said.

"It's just about playing my role and trusting the other 21 guys will as well."

Essendon, seventh on the ladder, meets Collingwood, fourth, on Thursday in the ANZAC Day clash.

"They're a super side," Merrett said. "It's going to be a tough game, but I'm looking forward to it."
