The Kangaroos fought hard to secure their first points of the season in a 17.10 (112) to 13.16 (94) victory over East Warrnambool on a hot south-west day at Reid Oval.
Timms said the Kangaroos had taken some promising steps in the past two weeks.
"We're a young group and it's game three of a three to four-year plan so to get a win, and get so close to Timboon last week, we as a group think we are on the right track," he said.
"We get a couple of key players back and we'll push any side but it's a matter of sustaining it."
The first-year Creek mentor said a number of senior players could return for his side's clash against Allansford at Mack Oval.
"We could have up to three blokes back from injury next weekend," he said. "We will have Caleb Templeton, maybe Liam Boyle and Billy Mcphee. They're all three key, handy senior players too.
"We're slowly building. We have had a couple of injuries to start off the year and it's a matter of getting them all on the park together so they can start gelling like they did today."
East Warrnambool coach Danny Chatfield saw plenty of upside in his side's loss but was weary it needed to address its slow starts in the coming weeks.
"They jumped us early and we were trying to play catch up right from the first quarter," he said.
"I got the feeling in the warm up that we were a bit flat and I tried to drive it home to the boys in the huddle before the game that we need to be up and about.
"The emphasis I put on the boys is we must start well going forward because if you are caught behind the eight ball trying to play catch up it just doesn't happen."
Despite the tough loss Chatfield found a bright moment between a father and his son.
"Young Jamara Ugle-Hagan came in to play one game with his old man (Aaron Hagan)," he said.
"I'm glad we made that happen as we've been trying to make it happen for four years and that was another bonus for us.
"He is playing NAB league with Oakleigh (Chargers) so if he gets another bye we will try and accommodate him to play with his old man before he will go on to bigger and better things as this could be his father's last season."
Ugle-Hagan finished his first senior appearance wearing the red and black with three goals to his name.
East Warrnambool's next fixture is against Panmure next Saturday.
