It was a pleasing sight for coach Stacey O'Sullivan to see three of the club's under 17 players stepping up in the absence of some key players.
Rachel Dobson was rested after an ankle injury last weekend, while Bridget Roache was a late withdrawal with a migraine.
Then in the fourth quarter with the Saints just two goals ahead they were without captain Emily-Rose Finnigan, who sat the quarter on the bench.
"We were little bit underdone and I knew I had to rest them as much as possible for them to get through most of the game," she said.
"They (South Warrnambool) put the pressure on us in the third quarter but it was our young ones in the last quarter that stepped up after Emily went off with a sore knee.
"We had three under 17s girls in wing defence, goal defence and goal keeper and they did a good job and pushed it back out.
"Layla Monk played in goal keeper, Zahli (Adams) in goal defence and Taylah (McInerney) wing defence so they are all the under 17 girls and they did really well.
"They play together and they are eager so its great to see that they can just jump in and know each others' game so when they combine on the court it makes a big difference."
O'Sullivan said she also had to grab premiership star Jacqui Bowman out of retirement to fill a spot in a "once off" appearance.
Roosters coach Mandy Van Rooy said her young side's tough loss to an experienced Saints side would be beneficial for her troops heading into the future.
"You can't say you don't want to be like them as they have won so many premierships but we want to be able to use our younger players and turn them into senior players," she said.
"And when the opportunity arises for them to step up and take that pressure they're going to grab it and take hold of it.
"Today I thought at certain points they really did that and that's pleasing but we just have to do it for four quarters."
