Reverend Malcolm Frazer, of the Warrnambool Uniting Church, said the theme in 2019 was Reclaiming the Sacred.

He said the fast-paced nature of life meant sometimes people forgot to mark sacred milestones.

"We recognise that we live in a very very busy world these days," Reverend Frazer said.

"Today it's Good Friday - our most sacred day in the church calendar - yet we also recognise we are competing with many things, that's the world in which we live.

"Football matches are even on Good Friday now and along with the football matches you know what comes with them - gambling."

The Walk of Witness was organised by the Combined Churches of Warrnambool.

Reverend Frazer encouraged people to pause and remember the true meaning of sacred days such as Good Friday.

"Thank you for coming today," he told those assembled at Cannon Hill.

"Today we reclaim a part of the sacred and as we walk may we be aware that we are walking on sacred ground together."
