Lashell Bruhn, 41, of no fixed address, pleaded guilty in Warrnambool Magistrates Court on Tuesday to theft.
The court heard she attended the Warrnambool train station about 2pm on Monday.
She asked staff about a timetable before removing two charity tins from the front desk before walking into a bathroom.
A member of staff observed the theft and called 000. Police attended the scene. Bruhn admitted the theft and returned one of the tins to the station manager.
A second tin was located in a nearby bin. She was arrested and conveyed to Warrnambool police station.
Bruhn told the court she had been "doing it hard" and had moved to Warrnambool to make a new start but it hadn't worked out.
