Former player Matthew Love and last season's recruit Jason Mungean will captain and coach Brierly-Christ Church's top-grade side after leader Mark Murphy stepped aside from both roles at the end of the season.

The Bulls were defeated by Russells Creek in the 2018-19 season's grand final in March.

Love, 40, returns to the south-west after spending time in Melbourne playing for Victorian Premier Cricket sides Footscray and North Melbourne/Greenvale, where he was captain-coach last season.

The right-handed batsman, who moved back to Warrnambool with wife Mercedes, said he was eager to get into the role after watching the club's strong progress from a distance.

"I watched a fair bit of their finals campaign last season and the Twenty20 win in the Sungold Cup, which was good for club," he said.

"The spirit around the club is really strong and I will look to continue what Mark (Murphy) has been able to do and get it in a strong position and the aim for me is to make finals again and continue on that one step further."

Love said his nephew Campbell and a fresh change had also been a catalyst for him returning to his junior club.

Mungean confirmed he would be playing-coach next season and said the chance to lead the club's top side was something he couldn't ignore.

"Mark wanted to step back and I saw it as a perfect opportunity to take the reins and keep Mark's work going," the Bulls bowler said.

"The way we finished the year we will be hoping to continue on and fingers crossed we can go one better.

"There is not much to change and we have a good core of players who can make a difference."

Mungean said the addition of Love would be an added bonus for the Bulls.
