Aquis Farm paid $2.3 million for the yearling colt which will be trained by Maher and his training partner David Eustace at Caulfield.
"He's a magnificent colt," the Caulfield Cup-winning trainer said.
"He's got a great pedigree and is similar to his brother Merchant Navy who we trained.
"He's a loving walking colt. He was the star colt of the sale and I'm delighted that Aquis have decided that we can train him."
Merchant Navy won the Coolmore Stud Stakes at Flemington before winning the Greenlands Stakes and the Diamond Jubilee Stakes in England when trained by champion trainer Aidan O'Brien.
Merchant Navy stood his first season at stud in New South Wales last year.
Maher said more than 10 yearlings from the two-day sale would find themselves at his Caulfield stables.
"We've made some purchases and a few owners have indicated they want us to train the yearlings they had purchased," he said.
"It was an excellent sale for our stable. The well-bred yearlings made excellent money which is to be expected when you attend a sale like this."
Warrnambool's Wilde stable paid $95,000 for a filly by Written Tycoon.
