Numbers lifted by 666, with agents yarding large numbers of the regular cow portion off the back of the significant lift in prices over the past few weeks. All regular processors were present and again joined by the export buyer from last week. Prices fluctuated across categories, with some better sales in the cow run. Not all weights and grades were represented, with a plain offering of young cattle primarily purchased by the processors. Trade heifers sold from 220c to 268c, lifting 13c/kg, with no steers sold to trade. A few heifers went to feed for 202c/kg. The small number of grown steers and bullocks offered today lacked finish, with processors taking them home from 237c to 241c/kg. Grown heifers were also plainer types, making from 220c to 235c/kg. There were some very good heavy manufacturing steers offered, creating a lift of 8c to 20c, making from 198c to 230c/kg. The quality in the cow run was good, along with the additional numbers. Heavy 4 score beef cows lifted 8c, making from 210c to 230c and the better conditioned dairy portion also increased 4c, receiving from 180c to 210c/kg. The plainer portion of 1 and 2 score cows sold in a fluctuating market, making from 120c to 156c, with some very ordinary muscled cows receiving as little as 65c/kg. It was a better quality yarding of bulls this week, sold to the usual buying group. The better beef shapes sold from 210c to 240c and the good dairy portion made from 160c to 185c/kg.

BALLARAT CATTLE
April 1. Yarding: 384. Change: 121.
Numbers improved by 121 head to 384 head this week at Ballarat. Quality was mixed and ranged from very poor conditioned cows and heifers, to several pens of quality young cattle. The usual buying group attended and operated in a mostly firm market, which saw prices ease on some of the plainer young cattle, and improve on the yearlings, grown heifers and most of the better covered cows. Vealers sold from 5c to 10c easier to the trade on quality, with restockers paying either side of firm for their supplies, while yearlings sold from 10c to 15c/kg dearer to the trade and similar to restockers and feeders. Medium grown steers sold dearer, and made to 280c, with the better covered grown heifers selling from firm to 10c/kg dearer on last week. Dairy type manufacturing steers sold to 213c/kg, improving on last week. Clean C and D muscle cows sold from 5c to 10c dearer, making to 229c/kg, while the over conditioned heavy cows eased. Heavy B muscle bulls sold dearer and made to 213c/kg. Numbers were made up of 107 cows, 89 heifers, 117 steers, 53 bulls and several pens of open auction young cattle. Vealers to the trade sold from 208c to 292c, with the plainer lots making from 162c to 200c, while feeders and restockers paid from 162c to 252c/kg. Yearlings to the trade made from 180c to 273c, while restockers and feeders paid from 160c to 260c/kg. Only a few grown steers were penned, with the medium weights selling from 232c to 280c, while the heavy weights made to 237c, and feeders paid from 202c to 220c/kg. Medium grown heifers sold from 200c to 234c, while the heavier lots sold from 212c to 250c/kg. Restockers paid from 190c to 220c/kg for heifers.
