Detective Sergeant Mark James, of the Hamilton police crime investigation unit, said the aggravated burglary was reported to police about 8pm Tuesday night at a Tyers Street address in Hamilton.
He said a warrant was executed by police officers at a Dempster Drive property on Wednesday morning and three people were now assisting police with their inquiries - a 42-year-old man, a 34-year-old woman and a teenage male.
"The complainant, the occupant of the Tyers Street home, suffered bruising and soreness," he said.
"We're trying to get to the bottom of a convoluted tale."
Detective Sergeant James requested anyone with information about the alleged home invasion contact the Hamilton police station or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
