Funakoshi Karate instructor Peter Conroy said he was thrilled with his squad's results in round one of the National All Styles Karate Tournament held in Melbourne on Sunday.

"I'm more than impressed with the progress and success of the squad," he said.
"We're probably the smallest club on the circuit, but we're over-represented on the podium."
Sensei Jill Cole had an outstanding tournament taking first in the mixed black belt veteran's kata and women's black belt veteran's continuous sparring.
She also took second in the women's black belt veteran's point sparring.
But most remarkable were her results in the open division where she took on competitors much younger than herself.
She finished second in the women's black belt open kata, women's black belt open point sparring and women's black belt open continuous sparring.
"She's an incredible competitor," Conroy said.
Jill's son, Tobi Cole, also enjoyed a successful tournament.
The 18-year-old was first in the male black belt continuous sparring, third in the male black belt open point sparring and fourth in the male black belt open kata.
Conroy said Tobi was starting to reap the rewards of his persistence.
Tobi was last year awarded most improved student at Funakoshi Karate's Terang Dojo (club).
William Kemp also got among the medals claiming second place in the male advanced continuous sparring and third in the male advanced point sparring.
Meanwhile, teenager Justin Glennen put in strong performances taking fourth in the 14-15 years male point sparring and fourth in the 15-17 years male continuous sparring.
The Warrnambool-based student was fifth in the 14-15 years male kata.
Sunday's event was the first of three rounds in the National All Styles Karate Tournament and Funakoshi Karate had six competitors.
Funakoshi Karate's head office is in Warrnambool and it has bases in Terang, Camperdown and Hamilton.
