The NHVR's Performance Based Standards program offers the heavy vehicle industry the potential to achieve higher productivity and safety through innovative and optimised vehicle design.
PBS vehicles are designed to perform their tasks as productively, safely and sustainably as possible, and to operate on networks that are appropriate for their level of performance.
The basic principle of PBS is matching the right vehicles to the right tasks.
PBS vehicles are tested against 16 stringent safety standards and four infrastructure standards to ensure they fit the existing road network and are safe.
The scheme has been in operation since October 2007.
In addition to the display NHVR's chief engineer Les Bruzsa and manager Access Roger Garcia will deliver presentations on benefits of the PBS scheme, PBS trends and PBS performance issues, as well as access related issues.
The open day will allow local road managers to better understand options to tackle their local freight task.
NHVR stakeholder specialist Simone Reinertsen said the event will be the biggest PBS demo day yet.
"At least 12 vehicles will be put through their paces, and we're expecting more than 60 people including industry, council mayors, CEOs and engineers from councils all over Australia to attend," she said.
"Trucking industry representatives will be able to talk directly with councils to get a better understanding of the capabilities of these vehicles. A number of councils are keen to explore how the vehicles can be part of major projects planned in their areas.
"The event is a great opportunity to develop cooperation between the NHVR, industry and road managers to make gains in productivity and safety in Australia's road freight task," she said.
The heavy vehicles on show at the Portland Aerodrome will include an impressive B-Quad, 23m 5-axle truck and dog trailer combination, a 26m A-Double tanker combination and a 30m A-Double combination capable of transporting two 40ft shipping containers.
The day follows the success of earlier heavy vehicle demonstrations in Townsville, Bundaberg and Toowoomba.
