Dut Dengshots, 29, of Exeter Court, Dandenong, pleaded guilty in Warrnambool Magistrates Court on Thursday to charges.
Magistrate Jon Klestadt said although the offending was at the lower end of the scale, Dengshot's long criminal history meant the only available penalty was prison.
Dengshot was jailed for one month.
In May last year Dengshot was bailed to a Dandenong address with the condition he not attend Warrnambool, the court was told.
Then on Febuary 23 this year he attended the Apco service station on Raglan Parade and argued with a staff member before leaving the store without paying for a packet of cigarettes.
He also attended the store on February 27 and March 3 and stole three chocolate bars.
Then on February 25 he attended the Timor Street Market and asked a stall holder if she would give him a message. She declined and walked away. Dengshot was later observed on CCTV stealing the woman's activity tracking watch.
Then on March 1 Dengshot attempted to fight an unknown victim in the Lava Street Coles car park. Police said he was armed with a metal chain and believed the victim had called him a "bludger".
Lawyer Jack Rabl said Dengshot was holding the lock chain of his bicycle and did not intend to scare the victim.
He said his client was sleeping rough in Warrnambool after he became estranged from family in Dandenong.
