Emily Armstrong has joined the Kangaroos in the Warrnambool and District Football Netball League after a year off netball and will play as goal shooter or goal attack.
Armstrong brings a wealth of experience to the young squad, having played numerous seasons with Deakin University Sharks and one season as a goal shooter at South Warrnambool in the Hampden league's first division.
The 26-year-old said she was excited to get back on court this season.
"I'm really looking forward to playing here and I know a few of the girls from umpiring and there's a few old Sharks players here as well," she said.
"That's why I came here and it's been good so far."
Russells Creek A grade coach Thalia Robertson said she was thrilled to have Armstrong on board.
"She is quite a tall player, we've really lacked having height over the last five to six years in our attacking end," she said.
"I've known her for a long time, I've watched her play netball for a very long time and she's quite an accurate shooter."
The Kangaroos' gun recruit stands at about 175cm.
Armstrong said it had been a challenge to get back into netball after a season away from the game.
"I'm back into the fitness, it hurt a lot," she said with a laugh.
"Playing the first few games and trials, I definitely felt it.
"I'm getting back into it now which is good."
The goalie hails from Pakenham and played junior netball with Rythdale Officer Cardinia which also happens to be the Kangaroos.
She moved to Warrnambool after high school to study a bachelor of marine biology at Deakin University.
She also completed honours and is now studying a PhD in marine biology.
Armstrong said her ambition was to teach marine biology and to undertake research.
"I love the teaching part," she said.
Russells Creek faces Merrivale first up on April 6.
The Kangaroos are hoping to build on their fifth placing last season, after making finals for the first time in about 15 years.
They went down to Old Collegians in the elimination final last season.
Coach Robertson said most players in her side this season were under 24 years of age.
"I think we'll be a lot more consistent than what we were last year in terms of having the same team available each week," she said.
"It'll be very interesting to see how we go as we're still quite young.
"We're pushing for finals and I think we'll be disappointed if we don't play finals."
