There was an overall good quality offering in the increased sized yarding of 790 cattle. The regular buyers attended and last week's restocker buyer on cows was not here, but an additional restocker operated on young cattle. In contrast to last week's token offering, grown steers were in good supply and their penning was comprised of young through to older and heavier weights. These older and heavier bullocks were severely discounted despite their good quality. Young cattle on average were 10c to 15c cheaper, but the best quality sold equal to 10c/kg easier. Stronger restocker competition saw some of their sales actually sell on a dearer trend. Better covered cows were 2c to 10c easier, but leaner grades were 20c cheaper and poor quality eased 20c to 40c/kg. The better C muscled vealers made from 250c to 270c, with restockers paying to 276c/kg. Most yearlings sold from 225c to 260c, with the odd best sales making up to 285c/kg. The D2 grade of yearlings received from 185c to 216c, with poor and plain 1 scores mainly making from 67c/kg. The general run of C muscled grown steers up to 4 tooth sold from 222c to 276c, with those older and some heavier bullocks making from 182c to 228c/kg. Heavy 3 and 4 score beef cows sold from 173c to 200c, with the best making 205c/kg. D2 cows made from 135c to 179c, with the D1 grade receiving from 121c to 155c and the few E1 cows sold at 70c, 80c and 110c/kg. Two B2 heavy weight bulls sold from 212c to 214c, with the two C2 bulls receiving 208c/kg.

BALLARAT CATTLE
March 4. Yarding: 390. Change: 121.
Numbers lifted by 121 head, with 390 cattle yarded this week at Ballarat. Quality varied from average to good, with more better quality young cattle yarded, suiting the trade, feeders and restockers. Reports of low water supplies are forcing more cattle to be offloaded. Quality young cattle sold to stronger competition to both feeders and the trade, at times 20c to 25c/kg up on last week. Vealers and young cattle sold from 206c to 300c to the trade and from 208c to 284c/kg to feeders and restockers. The few grown steers sold easier on quality, and grown heifers eased to 5c/kg. Manufacturing steers sold from similar to 5c/kg stronger. The heavy C and D muscle 3 and 4 score cows sold similar, with most other cows easing from 5c to 10c/kg. Clean well covered cows sold to 204c/kg. Heavy beef bulls made to 217c to be to 5c/kg cheaper on last week. Numbers comprised 77 cows, 144 heifers, 117 steers, 53 bulls and a few pens of open auction young cattle. Vealers sold to the trade from 183c to 294c, with feeders and restockers paying from 201c to 284c/kg.
Lighter, plainer lots sold from 72c to 154c/kg. Yearlings sold to the trade from 206c to 300c, with feeders paying from 210c to 282c/kg. Medium and heavy grown steers sold from 220c to 250c, with lighter D1 grades receiving 160c/kg. Feeders paid from 180c to 269c/kg for steers. Medium grown heifers sold from 180c to 217c, as heavy weights made from 170c to 230c, while feeders paid 226c/kg for grown heifers. Manufacturing dairy bred steers sold from 155c to 188c, with crossbreds receiving from 160c to 175c/kg.
