The Corangamite Model Aircraft Club held day one of their annual two-day Fun Fly event at the Camperdown Racecourse.
Club secretary Peter Baker said avid flyers came from as far as Seymour, Shepparton and Warracknabeal.
"It's really more of a social thing than anything," he said.
"People come down, have a chat and compare and fly their planes.
"Tonight we'll all catch up over dinner before coming back and doing it all again tomorrow."
Club president Foster Taylor said he has been flying model aircrafts since 1990.
"The Fun Fly days are a good opportunity for people to come down and see different types of aircrafts," he said.
"Something that is suited to Peter may not be suited to me. This is a good opportunity for people to see what it's like to fly certain models, as well as learn new skills.
"The key is learning how to land. Anyone can take off and steer, but it's about decreasing your speed and altitude, lining up with the runaway and slowing down before landing in the right place - that's the skill.
"Bill Woodmason was the Camperdown instructor that taught me how to fly, so now I'm teaching as a way to pay him back. If we don't teach and target the right audience, such as secondary school kids, then the club could die."
The youngest current member of the club is about 45-years-old.
"We'd love to see some more of the young ones join," Mr Taylor said.
"Even if they just want to have a look and have a chat. There's no such thing as a silly question and it's not rocket science, but it is a hobby that's a bit different to what people might have normally done."
The Corangamite Model Aircraft Club meet at the Camperdown Racecourse every Sunday, weather permitting.
Day two of the Fun Fly event will kick off from 9am Sunday.
