Detective Senior Constable Ashlea Witham, of the Warrnambool police crime investigation unit, said that at 10.20 am on Tuesday an 83-year-old woman left her house on foot to catch a bus to Warrnambool's Gateway Plaza complex from a bus stop in Caroville Drive.
She returned to her home at 10.55am and was confronted by an unknown man walking out into the front yard from between the garage and side fence.
"The direction this person came from indicated that he had come from rear yard of house," Detective Senior Constable Witham said.
"When the victim asked what he was doing there, the male stated that he wanted a drink of water. He then walked off in the direction of Baileyana Drive.
"It was later identified that the male had entered the house via an unlocked window and cut the fly screen, stealing $700 cash from inside a bedroom drawer."
Detective Senior Constable Witham said investigators had released images of a man they believe could assist with their inquiries.
The man is described to be 25-35-years-old, clean shaven, brown short hair, medium build and wearing khaki/cream coloured shorts and a purple/maroon hoodie, sneakers and carrying a black backpack.
