South-west police road safety manager Senior Sergeant Chris Asenjo said the teenage cyclist was heading east on the highway about 4.45pm when he tried to cross the road onto the old bridge over the Hopkins River at Allansford.

A four-wheel-drive, driven by a woman heading west on the highway, took evasive action to avoid a collision with the cyclist.

She was being followed by a cement truck.

There was a collision and the cyclist died at the accident scene.

Senior Sergeant Asenjo said the drivers of the four-wheel-drive and the cement truck were both taken to the Warrnambool Base Hospital.

The cement mixer was driven by a Warrnambool man aged in his 60s.

"My understanding is that the driver of the four-wheel-drive was more seriously injured than the truck driver," he said.

Senior Sergeant Asenjo said the tragic incident had rocked the Allansford community.

"This is one of the worst stories of road trauma," he said.

"This incident has destroyed the fabric of a family. This is why we talk about road safety.

"We want to stop this sort of thing happening.

"I couldn't care less about revenue. This is about children getting home to be with their parents and parents being with their children.

"Nothing else matters to me at the moment."

Senior Sergeant Asenjo said everyone had someone who cared and loved them, even if they didn't think they did.

"Everyone has someone. A child, parent, brother, sister, foster parents, school friend, workmate, employee or employer," he said.

"That's why the road safety message is so important.

"People can complain about the state of the roads or revenue raising, but Thursday's events are the clearest example of why we don't want to lose anyone else on our roads."

Thursday: AN Allansford teenager who was riding to cricket training has died after a truck and cyclist collided on the Princes Highway near Allansford this afternoon.

Police are currently at the scene.

It is believed a truck was travelling west on the highway near Ziegler Parade when the collision occurred about 4.45pm.

A 16-year-old Allansford boy died at the scene.

The truck driver, a Warrnambool man in his 60s, was taken to hospital for observation.

The driver of a second vehicle who took evasive action was also taken to hospital.

Warrnambool Police Acting Sergeant Ben Timpson said the exact cause of the crash is being investigated.

"It's terrible circumstances we find ourselves in," he said.

"The family have been notified and they're quite distraught at this stage. 

"It's just a reminder to take care and pay attention on the road."

EARLIER: A collision on the Princes Highway in Allansford has left a cement truck on its side and another vehicle lying on the ground off the road. 

Police, SES and firefighters are at the scene. 

Police are now diverting eastbound traffic on the Princes Highway in between the Premier Speedway and Ziegler Parade.
