The inaugural senior female competition for the region will launch on June 16.

This comes after the successful staging of the Deakin University Female Football League (DUFFL) for junior players.

The DUFFL will begin its 2019 season on April 28. 

There are four teams confirmed for the senior league, with expressions of interest being taken for more teams, and 11 for the juniors.  

AFL Western District region general manager Kate Williamson is encouraging women to have a go at playing football.

“Local clubs are now in the swing of weekly trainings, which are a great way for new players to learn new skills, make new friends and enter a new sporting pathway,” she said.

“Playing is great but it certainly isn’t the only way to be involved in football.

“There is a range of capacities, including coaching, umpiring, training and team managing.

“I encourage women who are interested to get involved.”

She said in 2018 there was a 34 per cent growth in female football teams in Victoria from the previous year.
