Barwidgee is a long established Angus herd at Caramut. Barwidgee has been selling performance recorded Angus bulls for nearly 60 years.
Wendy and David Kelly run the 600 cow Barwidgee herd and the couple are very pleased with the quality of the 18 month old bulls that they have on offer for their bull sale on Thursday February 28.
Lot 1 and 2 are both outstanding examples of high indexing Angus bulls. They have excellent growth (+133 and +127 respectively for 600-day growth), yet with both having a moderate birth weight of +4.7 they are only just over the Angus breed average when it comes to birth weight (+4.3). Combined with excellent carcase and structure, these bulls really do tick all the boxes.
The quality throughout the rest of the catalogue is excellent, both Wendy and David work very hard to ensure a very even line-up of bulls. A short joining (seven weeks) ensures all bulls are of a similar age and can be easily compared in performance. There is no split calving at Barwidgee and there are no second chances.
The Barwidgee program sees fertility as the main profit driver for a beef herd, so if a cow does not get in calf she is out of the herd. Mob sizes at Barwidgee are kept large to help with both management and performance data. Bull buyers can see this reflected in the high accuracy EBVs that are presented on sale bulls.
An impressive range of measurements throughout the animal’s lifetime, starting with every calf being weighed at birth, also contribute to the integrity of the Barwidgee performance recording data. Similarly, with calving ease, for the last 60 years’ heifers assisted at calving have been culled. This has ensured Barwidgee has calving ease well established in the genetics of the herd.
Barwidgee bulls are always excellent value for money with a good range of bulls selling in the $4000 - $5000 bracket. A good range of heifer bulls is also catalogued to suit the most discerning buyer. For more information, visit barwidgee.com.au.
