Smith trained Finn McCool to win the Penshurst Cup on Boxing Day last year.
Golden Authority’s run in the Colac Cup was only his third for Smith after stable clients purchased the former Matt Cumani-trained galloper from a mixed thoroughbred sale in December.
“I rated Golden Authority a great light-weight hope on the back of his two runs for me,” he said. “His first two runs for me in the Camperdown Cup and at Kyneton were terrific.
“It was a very good ride by Fred Kersley. He followed the riding instructions to the letter. He’s a very talented young jockey.
“I’ve got a stabling complex at Lake Fyans and Golden Authority has done a lot of work there in the deep sand. I would say the Lake Fyans property has been the rebirth of Golden Authority.
“We had set Golden Authority for the Colac Cup, it’s very rewarding when the plan comes to fruition. We’ll let the dust settle for a few days before making future plans for him.”
The five-year-old has won four of his 13 starts and took his stake earnings to just over $100,000 with his Colac Cup won.
