Trainer Simon Ryan said the last-start Caulfield winner will appreciate the drop in class for the feature race on the program.
“Tarquin is dropping in class but the downside is he’s up in weight,” Ryan said.
“He’s got to carry the 60 kilos over 2000 metres. He’s done well since the Caulfield win. The cup is offering good prizemoney when you throw in the bonus.
“We’ve only had Tarquin for the five runs so we’re still learning about the horse I’m quietly confident there’s a bit more improvement in him going forward. It looks a tough race on paper I’ve got a healthy respect for Strategic Demand.”
The Terang Cup will be run on April 14, while the Warrnambool Cup is set down for decision on May 2. Both races could be on the former James Cummings trained gallopers radar, according to Ryan.
“We’ll see how he goes in the Colac,” the former jumps jockey said. “The Warrnambool Cup is in our own backyard and the Terang Cup is only down the road.
“I’ll have a clearer picture where we’re going in the future after Sunday. We had in mind a jumps campaign so that’s another option we’ve got open for Tarquin in the future.”
The Colac Cup is race seven on the eight event program and is scheduled to start at 4.50pm.
