The south-west Disabled Surfing Association branch will host its second and final free event for the season on Saturday for anyone with a disability.
President Aidan Nicolson said participants used specialised surf boards and other modified equipment to take to the water in Warrnambool’s Lady Bay.
“We’ve got the equipment and the expertise and the volunteer base to be able to cater to pretty much any disability including people in wheelchairs and paraplegics,” Mr Nicolson said.
"They don’t need any equipment. We’ve got wetsuits, beach wheelchairs and we’ve got surfboards suitable for them.”
The popular program continues to be a success, attracting residents from across the south-west wanting to try surfing.
More than 60 volunteers and 37 surfers took to the water for the south-west Disabled Surfing Association event in December.
The program was expanded this season to include a second session due to its popularity.
Mr Nicolson said it provided participants with a beach experience they may not otherwise have in a fun and supportive environment.
He said they also supplied a free barbecue lunch and he welcomed anyone thinking about volunteering to get in touch.
“We always need a huge army of volunteers, both on land and in the water,” Mr Nicolson said.
