There will be a financial literacy workshop for women held at the Warrnambool Bowls Club on Thursday March 7 from 10am to 5pm.
Financial adviser Emma Arthur is helping organise the event and said it would cover the fundamentals of investments and taxation.
“We’ve managed to get some really good female speakers for the day,” she said.
The team of presenters includes Mrs Arthur and Fiona Giblin from Maddens Lawyers.
Rebecca Ross from Moyne Health Services will talk about aged-care and there will also be a session from an accountant.
The idea for the workshop started back in November when the president of the Association of Independent Retirees (AIR) in Warrnambool approached Mrs Arthur.
President Rod Carter had been inspired by a similar program run by the Australian Shareholders’ Association.
But he said that program was only run in Ballarat and Geelong.
He then approached Mrs Arthur about running a session in Warrnambool.
“She jumped at the chance,” he said.
Mrs Arthur has presented a number of sessions for the AIR in the past few years including about aged-care, Centerlink and investments.
Mr Carter said feedback from the AIR had also motivated him to organise a workshop.
“The need has been demonstrated at our meetings,” he said.
Mr Carter said some of the women in the group are now widows and their husbands had managed their finances.
Mr Carter said he had received positive feedback about the session to be run in Warrnambool.
The session is open to woman of all ages and can cater for more than 100 people.
The workshop is designed to help participants learn how to comprehend basic finance and investment terms.
It also aims to help participants understand basic investment structures and taxation obligations.
Participants can also gain insight into the importance of estate planning including having a will and power of attorney.
There will also be advice provided on what to look for when sourcing a professional adviser and advice about how to prepare for aged-care.
