In conjunction with the Warrnambool RSPCA, PETstock will host the fifth National Pet Adoption Day to help rehome rescued kittens, cats and dogs.
PETstock store manager Kris Penny said it was important for people to help re-home rescued animals, and to stop purchasing animals that are bred for profit.
“This is all about the animals,” he said.
“If they don’t find homes the reality is that they are likely to be put down.
“We want to try and find them their forever home.”
Warrnambool RSPCA animal attendant Alice Rees-Lee would like the National Pet Adoption Day to increase awareness the benefits of adopting a rescued animal.
“All of our animals are vaccinated, microchipped and de-sexed,” she said, something that is not always the case with animals found online.
“We have a good history of where our animals come from, so we can pass on a lot of details to the adopting family.”
Having a comprehensive background of their animals helps the RSPCA match a new family with the appropriate pet, even when it is not what the family had originally planned.
“We provide them with history and information and knowledge about the breed.” Ms Rees-Lee said.
“People come in with a strong idea of what they want, and then they end up choosing something opposite because it is a better fit for their lifestyle.”
