Courtney said a fresh mindset was benefitting the Hampden league club.
“We’re not just focused on one or two or three stars but about 21 players that take the field. We want to make it more a team-based structure instead of what it has been in the past,” he said.
“There’s a lot of talent at this footy club and we’ve really got to drive that hard-working culture and put onball structures around the group as well as a defensive side.”
Courtney, who put the Bombers through a training run on the Australia Day public holiday on Monday, said he was happy with the players’ commitment levels.
“Last year the attendance at training was poor for whatever reason,” he said.
“It was a tough year on everyone. We’re just trying to put the focus back on enjoyment.
“We’re kicking the footy at training, trying to work on our skills. We want the boys to kick the ball 80 to 100 times at training and they are getting a lot of running in their kicking drills which is good too.”
The Bombers’ younger crop, including Lachie Gass, has impressed Courtney.
“He was training with the (Greater Western Victoria) Rebels but he pulled the pin,” he said.
“It got a bit hard with his parents on the farm in Simpson and travelling down to Warrnambool.
“It could be another thing he looks at in 12 months.
“He is only bottom-age under 18s so he’s still got that opportunity.
“I am sure they will keep him on their radar.”
