Jesse Gallichan has signed with the Roosters for the 2019 Hampden league season.
The midfielder-forward, 27, said he was eager to learn from new South Warrnambool coach Mat Battistello, praising his coaching credentials.
“I want to potentially go down the coaching path myself one day and want to learn from everyone,” he said.
“What he’s done with the Vic under 21s and coaching Lake Wendouree to a premiership and to be able to learn from someone like that (will be beneficial for me).”
Gallichan, who praised outgoing Pies coach Phil Carse, said it was hard to leave Camperdown.
He was part of the Magpies’ meteroic rise in 2018, playing in their narrow grand final defeat to Koroit.
“I’d like to think I’ve left on good terms and obviously I’ve made lifelong friends at that footy club,” Gallichan said.
“It will be a bit of fun (when I play against Camperdown) and I am up for a challenge.
“For two hours I might be their enemy but off the field I know I will have a beer with them after the game.”
Gallichan, who will play alongside second cousin Corey Gallichan at the Roosters, hopes the leadership qualities he built at the Magpies will help him transition into his new football home.
He is bullish about South Warrnambool’s flag chances.
“Most of the boys at South have tasted what it takes to win finals games,” Gallichan said.
“I think maybe adding my experience playing in the grand final and coming so close will add a bit of knowledge if we do make it that far.”
Gallichan will have his first training run at Friendly Societies’ Park on Wednesday when the Roosters resume pre-season.
The Corangamite Shire worker will live in Camperdown and travel down the highway to train with his new club each week.
He joins former Magpie Charlie Bradshaw as a key Roosters’ recruit.
