Mortlake Police Acting Sergeant Jo Wastell said after the driver, a local man, came to an area of road works his trailer appeared to have grabbed on the road.
She said this pulled the vehicle into a ditch, taking the prime mover and trailer with it.
The driver landed on his left side and suffered minor injuries.
“The road had only been dug up the day before so it was a bit soft,” Acting Sergeant Jo Wastell said.
Police said the driver’s two trailers were fully-laden with wheat, all lost during the incident.
The truck was towed to Melbourne, while the scene took over seven hours to clean up.
