A FAMILY of six escaped a fire that gutted a three-bedroom weatherboard house in Mortlake on Sunday evening.
The blaze is believed to have been caused by an electrical appliance.
Detective Senior Constable Rachael McMahon, of the Warrnambool police crime investigation unit, said emergency services were alerted about 5.30pm Sunday.
The six occupants of the home were alerted by fire alarms and smoke and were able to evacuate.
Three people were taken to the Warrnambool Base Hospital for observation and treatment after suffering smoke inhalation.
Warrnambool and Mortlake district fire brigade units attended at the Bourke Street home.
Detective Senior Constable McMahon said police and Country Fire Authority investigators looked into the cause of the fire.
“They have decided it was not suspicious. The fire was caused by an electrical fault relating to an appliance,” she said.
