A passerby noticed the vehicle fully engulfed in flames about 4.30am and called the fire brigade.
Sergeant Bec Miles, of Warrnambool police, said officers believed the vehicle had been doing burnouts when the engine caught fire.
The driver then dumped the vehicle on the side of the Cobden-Port Campbell Road near Murfetts Road.
Tyre marks could be seen on the road about 200 metres from where the vehicle was abandoned.
The Warrnambool fire brigade was called to Grassmere about 5am on Sunday to extinguish a quad bike that was on fire.
Sergeant Miles said the burning quad bike was left at the intersection of Ibbs Lane and Plummers Hill Road.
“We don’t even know what brand it is it’s that far gone,” she said.
