Artistic director Bruce Widdop said there was a synergy between the play and the beach where Eva Carmichael and Tom Pearce washed ashore after the 1878 Loch Ard shipwreck.
“We are presenting Shakespeare’s shipwreck play in Australia’s most famous shipwreck site,” he said.
There are also wider links to an Australian narrative at play in the performance according to Mr Widdop.
“The play deals with two waves of colonists that get shipwrecked on a lonely island, with the indigenous inhabitants dispossessed.”
“There are universal themes in Shakespeare,” Mr Widdop said. “In the program we draw attention to the similarities, but we stay with the original text.
“The play is a fantastic mix of high drama, knock around comedy and tender romance. As Shakespeare’s final play it has everything.
“One of our objectives is to take audiences to some of Australia’s most spectacular natural and heritage locations, and we try to match plays to their most appropriate environment.”
People attending the performance are encouraged to bring cushions and to dress appropriately for the weather conditions. Tickets can be purchased from www.ozact.com, with performances to commence at 7pm on January 19, 20, 26 and 27.
