Against a strong North Western Wizards team on Wednesday, the Waves recorded a six-wicket win with 10 balls to spare.
Four wickets fell in the last over of the Wizards’ innings, three of those to Nestles paceman Jackson Couch and the other to a run out.
This helped restrict the Wizards to 9-112 from their 20 overs.
A flying start from openers Jackson Grundy (19) and Zavier Mungean (23) produced 40 runs from the first four overs for the Waves and laid a platform for Jordi Withers (48 not out) to guide his team to a winning score of 4-115 off 18.2 overs.
Western Waves coach Jeff Rosolin said it was a pleasing performance from his charges.
“We put a lot of emphasis on this game as our biggest challenge so far,” Rosolin said.
“It was really intense early but our boys were up for the fight.
“We got a couple of early wickets but they got to 3-80 at one stage. We did well to peg them back and keep them to 112. Our openers found the right balance with the bat, they hit balls with a bit of width to the boundaries and were able to pick the good ones and keep them out.”
The Waves have a double-header today against the Barwon Rockets and Western Spirit.
It was a mixed day for the Waves under 14 team, with one win and one loss.
The Waves defeated Rivers by eight wickets in the morning with Kaidyn Weber the star with 68.
In the afternoon, the Waves lost a close one to Wizards by nine runs. Chasing 98, the Waves were bowled out for 87 in the 18th over.
