Marcus Hickey is the Demons’ new playing coach, taking over from Mick Hunt who has stepped down.
Hickey is the Demons’ reigning best and fairest, having also won that award in 2011-12.
He steps up from his role as captain in 2018, a season where the Demons were knocked out in the first semi-final by Kolora-Noorat.
One of the Warrnambool and District Football Netball League’s leading ruckmen, Hickey said he was looking forward to his new role.
“Coaching hadn’t really been on the radar until the club approached me about it,” Hickey said.
“But when I sat down and had a think about it I realised it was a good time to give it a go.
“I have just got married but we haven’t got any kids yet so I have the time to put in and a passion to have a good crack at coaching.”
Coaching the Timboon Demons runs in the family for Hickey, with his brother Brendan having carried out the role in 2013-14.
Hickey, 27, said his older brother was among a good support network he had access to.
“I come from a big football family so I have plenty of people to bounce ideas off,” he said.
“There is a lot of support around the club which will be great, particularly as a playing coach.
“Coaches I have played under like Mick Hunt and Michael Clements have been a big influence on me and hopefully I can implement a bit of what I learnt from them.”
Hickey said he was happy with the playing group at his disposal.
“We have a young list so we are well placed,” he said.
“There is some good depth, our reserves played finals last year and I think 15 of them were under 21.”
