Warrnambool’s offering is so far is made up of 109 undergraduate first-round offers which were released on Wednesday, 21 early-round offers which were received in November and 25 international offers.
The most popular courses for 2019 were the Bachelor of Nursing, Bachelor of Marine Biology, Bachelor of Nursing/Midwifery and Bachelor of Commerce.
For the third consecutive year the university won’t offer its Bachelor of Laws program at the campus to first year students due to low numbers.
Vice-Chancellor Jane den Hollander said the new food and agribusiness major as part of the Bachelor of Commerce, along with increasing demand for marine science courses, reflected a “stronger and refocused link” between the campus and industry.
“To offer Deakin’s first course that focuses on agribusiness, from the Warrnambool campus located in the heart of Australia’s premier dairy region, is significant not only for the food and fibre sectors but for students eyeing off the jobs of the future,” Professor den Hollander said.
“Sixty per cent of the Great South Coast region’s economy depends on the food and fibre supply-chain which employs an estimated 22 per cent of the region’s workers.”
She said federal government funding had enabled the new agribusiness major to begin.
“Together with our increasing enrolments in marine science, we look to further support the key industry sectors of the south-west region.”
Professor den Hollander said the university would explore further course options as part of growing the food sector in the south-west.
“Deakin remains committed to the future of the Warrnambool campus and will continue to work with the community to grow the campus in line with student demand and the region’s needs.”
The 2019 offers don’t include upcoming second-round offers, direct entry applications and the offer of further scholarships which will occur before the academic year begins in March.
In 2018 the combined early offers, first-round and international offers were 145, compared to 142 in 2017.
