A Warrnambool man accused of assaulting his partner has been denied bail after he told a magistrate he needed to be home to look after his 15 pet cats.
Anthony Hunt, 52, of Hoddle Street, appeared in Warrnambool Magistrates Court charged with assault and breaching a court order.
In a self-represented bail application, he said he was the full time carer of his partner and had 15 pet cats that needed to be fed.
But Magistrate Franz Holzer said Mr Hunt had failed to show exceptional circumstances why he should be released and remanded him in custody until January 29.
Police said the victim attended the Warrnambool police station about 6pm on Tuesday and reported Mr Hunt dragged her by the hair and threw her to the ground.
She told police she "curled up like a dog" because she was scared.
Mr Hunt denied the assault, stating his partner had "walked about five steps then fell to the ground."
