The Western District Bowls Division Saturday Pennant premiership contender added another string to its 2018-19 bow on Saturday.
Shane Kelson played his first division one game for the season for Koroit Blue in its 102-71 away win over Terang Green.
A regular division two player, Kelson stepped into the top grade due to some player unavailability.
“We had a few away so a couple of us come in for today,” Kelson said.
“I’ve played division one three or four years ago.
“I enjoy the challenge, it’s a bit different, a bit of a step up playing with and against the big guns.
“But having said that, I do feel comfortable at this level, my form has been okay this season.”
A born-and-bred Koroit boy, Kelson joined the town’s bowls club eight years ago.
He said playing bowls was an enjoyable way to spend his summer days.
“It’s a good club, everyone gets along and there are some pretty handy bowlers,” Kelson said.
“There are a lot of blokes here I have worked with over the years so it’s always a bit of fun catching up with them.”
While Koroit Blue’s win was an expected outcome, Timboon Gold pulled off a major upset when it defeated competition powerhouse Warrnambool Gold.
On its home green, Timboon Gold captured a memorable 97-95 win.
It was Warrnambool Gold’s second loss in a row, having gone down to Port Fairy Red in the last game before the Christmas break.
Timboon Gold won just one of the four rinks but the scoreline its way in that, 31-23, close losses in two other rinks and a draw in the other meant it landed an unlikely victory.
After its heroics prior to Christmas, Port Fairy Red came back to earth with a big loss at the hands of City Memorial Red.
The final result was a comprehensive 133-57 victory for City Memorial Red who look sharp at the start of the second half of the season. The perennial grand finalists are sitting in third place.
