The under 17 female team fell to South East Breakers in Friday’s Youth Premier League grand final in Melbourne – 24 hours after the under 14 side lost to Inner East Emus in their decider.

Under 17 coach Maddi Tobias said her team could be proud of its efforts.

“The match was enjoyable and I've been stoked with how the girls have held themselves and represented their region, clubs, families and themselves this week,” she said.

The Waves were forced to defend 48 in a twenty20 contest against the Breakers.

But it proved too small a total. The Breakers reeled it in the 14^th over with six wickets in hand.

“(Captain) Jessica Field lost the toss and was sent into bat.,” Tobias said.

“After a collapse in the top order, Eliza Jagger held the fort down, bringing our total to 48.”

Tobias said the Wave started their defence strongly, “claiming a wicket on the first ball with a stellar catch by (Woodford’s) Grace Farrer off Taylah Casson's bowling”.

“Jess followed suit, taking a screamer that left the spectators speechless,” she said.

Casson, representing Mortlake, was the pick of the Waves’ bowlers across the competition, taking 13 wickets at an average of 9.4.

She finished her carnival with 1-13 off three overs in the grand final.

Western Waves’ under 14 boys, who started their campaign with two games in November and played one match in December, re-start their state championship series in Melbourne on Monday.

The under 18 boys team will also launch its YPL aspirations.
