Champion trainer Darren Weir has loaded all the bases with four runners in the 12-horse field as he attempts to win his fourth Woodford Cup in six years but Ryan is quietly confident Tarquin will run well.
“My bloke has drawn a good barrier and with the claim for apprentice jockey Teo Nugent I’m sure Tarquin will go well,” he said. “The 1.5 kg claim for Teo is a bonus. From his last five rides for me Teo has won three races. I’ve got my fingers crossed that our winning run will continue.
“I’ve only had Tarquin for the two runs. The first one was good at Ararat and his Pakenham run was not too bad. I’m sure Tarquin will appreciate the 1700 metres after two runs over shorter distances.
“The horse worked solidly over 1600 metres on the training track on Thursday. It’s a tough race but you expect that with the prizemoney and bonuses that are on offer.”
Weir saddles up Bondeiger, Romancer, Multitude and Euroman in the feature race on the program. Guizot and Etna are Aaron Purcell’s representatives in the race, while Matthew Williams – who won the race last year with Artie’s Shore – saddles up Our Bottino.
The first race is scheduled to start at 2.25pm with the cup due to begin at 6.00pm.
Meanwhile, At Galayel notched up his fourth win from nine starts for Ciaron Maher winning a $120,000 race at Moonee Valley on Saturday.
Maher, who trains in partnership with David Eustace, believes there are more wins in the future.
Igniting trained by the Maher-Eustace stable ran second at his debut in a $125,000 two-year-old race at Randwick on Saturday.
