Purcell saddles up Scherzoso and Double Bluff in the eight-horse field over 2040 metres.
“Scherzoso is working up to a win,” the Warrnambool-based trainer said.
“His form is not too bad when you have a close look at it.
“He ran second to Penny To Sell in the Dunkeld Cup and he’s gone on to win in town while Mahamedeis beat him at Traralgon and he’s won again.
“Scherzoso had a couple of minor leg problems when we got him but he appears to be over them now. He just needs a bit of luck to be very competitive.”
Double Bluff was formerly trained at Rosehill but and is now destined for a jumps career with Purcell.
“I’ve got a bit of opinion of Double Bluff,” he said.
“He’s got some nice staying form behind him and is coming to hand very well following three runs for us.
“We’ve done a bit of schooling over the jumps with him and he seems to handle them well.
“There’s a flat race over 2500 metres in the middle of January at Flemington which looks a suitable race for him.
“We’ll head down that path for now but our long-term aim is jumping races.”
Bookies rate Scherzoso a $15 hope and Double Bluff a $150 chance in the early betting on the race.
Al Galayel, trained by Winslow-raised Ciaron Maher and David Eustace, is well fancied in the betting markets in the same race as Scherzoso and Double Bluff.
The Maher-Eustace stable also has Three Legs In and Soul Star running at the Valley.
Igniting, a $180,000 yearling purchase, makes his debut in a two-year-old race over 1000 metres at Randwick.
Forbid Me Not runs in a fillies and mares race for Warrnambool’s Symon Wilde at Moonee Valley.
