Bright blue skies and a quality program of racing greeted the people who made their way to the annual Penshurst Boxing Day races.

Penshurst and District Racing Club secretary Brendan Kelly said that the key to the event was keeping the focus on the community.
“A day at the races is a great event for the community,” Mr Kelly said.
“Its a very relaxed atmosphere,” he said. “We have got great facilities, plenty of room and lots of green grass.”
Principally it is a local crowd, mostly people come back to enjoy Christmas with their family and then come out to enjoy a day at the races.”
Hawkesdale dairy farmers Tricia and Geoffrey Blackmore enjoying coming to the Penshurst races to help support a local event.
“There are lots of activities,” Mrs Blackmore said. “You can have a bet and there is lots for the kids to do.”
Penshurst’s Sonia Wood enjoyed the races with her daughters Georja and Chloe as a girl’s day out.
“We try to come each year,” Mrs Wood said. “This is Chloe’s first Penshurst Cup because she is usually at work on Boxing Day.”
Racing club secretary Brendan Kelly thanked the club committee for their hard work in putting the event together each year.
“They are a volunteer committee and contribute between 800-1000 hours of work to make the Penshurst Cup run,” he said.
