Former world champion and Commonwealth Games medalist Margaret Sumner is still having an influence at the Terang Bowls Club. Sumner still plays in the Terang Gold team that competes in the top grade of the Western District Bowls Division competition each Tuesday.
One of her teammates, Helen Kenna, credits Sumner as her bowling mentor.
“Margaret asked me to play bowls four years ago so I decided to give it a go,” she said.
“She is great to play with, she is very encouraging and always positive. It’s a great opportunity to play with one of the best.”
Terang Gold finished last on the ladder in 2017-18 but is a team on the way up this season.
Kenna is keen for this improvement to continue.
“We know it will be tough but we would love to play finals,” Kenna said.
“We have a really good group together this year and hopefully we can keep on getting better.”
On Tuesday, in the last round of matches before the Christmas break, Terang Gold travelled to take on Dennington Red.
It was a successful road trip, with Terang Gold winning 78-69. Port Fairy Gold had a 81-53 win over Koroit Orange.
Mortlake Blue defeated City Memorial Green 89-43, Timboon Marron lost to Lawn Tennis Green 78-55 and City Memorial Gold defeated Warrnambool Gold 97-64.
