Warrnambool competitor James McFadden will spend the next three months travelling Australia with his Monte Motorsport team.
The Perth-based team’s truck becomes the 2017 Grand Annual Sprintcar Classic winner’s home away from home.
“It’s all I’ve ever done, so it’s normal for me,” McFadden said of his summer travels.
“Our workshop is the truck basically. The race shop is based in Perth and then we’re based here out of Warrnambool for the summer.
“Going to Brisbane and that, we have everything in the trailer. We have another two cars upstairs (in the truck) and the three wings and rear ends and enough to build two or three cars.
“It is pretty self-sufficient and it’s good being on the road, it’s what I like to do.”
McFadden, an engine builder by trade who is now a full-time driver, works closely with his small but committed team.
They can build a car in three hours if they’ve got all the equipment, replace an engine in 15 minutes and swap a frontend in two minutes.
“We’ve got ‘Buzzy’ (Kim Buswell) who is crew chief and then Brodie (Moller),” he said.
“He is 16 and he’s from Perth, and he’s coming on the road this year to do speedweek through to the classic.
“We’ve got Stephen (Hamm-Reilly) from America who has come for three months and he’ll be helping us as well.”
McFadden, who is determined to defend his World Series Sprintcars title, said he was excited to have Moller as part of the team.
“He did a bit with us last year and it’s good he’s not playing computer games and is out on the road with us instead,” he said.
“He’ll probably get to see a lot of cool things. I remember I did it at his age before I was racing and it was good fun.”
McFadden, who will compete in Max’s Race at Premier Speedway on Saturday night, did 90 races in America and Australia last season.
The constant nature keeps the two-time Australian champion in shape.
“We race so much so you stay pretty race fit,” he said.
“I couldn’t run down the road, I’d be puffed, but I can drive one of these for two hours no worries.
“I do a little bit of bike riding. I hate the gym so I don’t do a lot of gym work.”
McFadden is one of 51 drivers nominated for Max’s Race.
