Well fancied in the betting, Superhard defeated Silentz by a head with the Logan McGill-trained Gold Fields a long head away in third place in the 1400-metre race.
Weir’s race-day representative Brady Cross praised jockey Jarrod Lorenski for his winning ride.
“It was a very good ride by Jarrod,” he said.
“He had Superhard well positioned in the run behind the leaders Victory Downs and Lord Sundowner before pulling him out at the right time to work his way into the race.
“Superhard fought it out strongly over the concluding stages. I’m not sure what ‘Weiry’ has got planned for the horse but I reckon he may look at taking Superhard to town for another race.”
Lorensini said he was confident a long way out in the race.
“I was travelling really well in the run on the back of the leaders,” the Ballarat-based jockey said.
“I was just waiting for the leaders to weaken.
“I planned I would make my run on the home corner.
‘I could hear the other horses coming at us near the finishing line line but my bloke hung on to score a good win. Superhard is up to stronger class races. I think races around the 1400 metres are possibly his best distance.”
The lightly-raced four-year-old has won six of his 15 starts.
Superhard and Silentz are both trained at Weir’s Warrnambool satellite stable.
Jockeys Damien Thornton and Jordan Childs shared the riding honours with winning doubles on the eight-race program.
Thornton was succuessful on Astrobite and Vellastar while Childs won on Haggarty and Converging.
