The Melbourne youth appeared in a court on Thursday charged with criminal damage and theft-related offences.
A lawyer said the youth was held in Warrnambool police station's adult police cells overnight - an experience the 16-year-old found "unpleasant".
She said her client was on bail for a spate of offending in June, but he otherwise had limited prior court appearances.
A magistrate said the accused had come before the court in challenging circumstances.
The youth was bailed to appear in another court during January, with conditions he not consume alcohol or drugs.

There's three young people in the Warrnambool police station cells to appear in court today charged with a range of offences.
A 16-year-old kicking in a roller door at the Premix King and stole a bottle of Devil's Cut bourbon at 12.10am.
He was arrested after being found hiding in the bin at the rear of a LIebig Street restaurant.
Warrnambool police Sergeant James van Engelen said the Melbourne youth was already on five counts of bail relating to charges including theft, burglary, breaching court orders, possession of cannabis and failing to appear in court.
He travelled to Warrnambool at 9.30pm and at 12.10am this morning walked to the rear of the Premix King in the Coles car park off Lava Street where he gained entry to the building after repeatedly kicking a roller door.
Once inside he selected a 700ml bottle of Devil's Cut bourbon and fled.
Police were alerted and checked the Warrnambool City Council cameras.
The youth was seen in Koroit Street before entering the Ozone car park where he hid in a plastic skip bin at the back of a restaurant.
A very surprised police officer found the youth hiding in the skip.
The 16-year-old was arrested, remanded in custody and will appear in a court today.
Two Warrnambool young men were also arrested after police raided a Warrnambool home last night.
One of the men was already on a community corrections order for trafficking drugs.
A warrant was issued for his arrest after he failed to appear in court on a drug driving charge.
A search warrant was executed at 8.25pm Wednesday and capsules of prescription medication Lyrica were found in a bedroom.
Another man was also arrested at the house.
They will both appear in the Warrnambool Magistrates Court for bail/remand hearings today.
